Up for sale is this hand turned Ancient 8th Century BC Roman Canteen. This great piece was created in North Carolina by local woodturner / artist J. The canteen is a replica of an 8th Century BC Roman canteen and is hollowed and will hold liquid. It is made of English Walnut, African Paduak and African Gabon Ebony. The basic canteen is made from 2 pieces of English Walnut with a piece of African paduak. In the center and the Ebony glued to the top to form the drinking spout. Then the piece was turned on a wood lathe utilizing multi axis techniques.

It was first turned from top to bottom to get the basic form, then the spout was drilled and hollowed, then it was turned to the other axis to hollow the body and insert the medallions. The medallions were turned and textured from Paduak and then fitted to the main body. Lastly the cap was turned from paduak and fitted to the Ebony spout.

Then lots and lots of sanding, and 6 coats of clear laquer and as you can see the contrast between the woods makes for a stunning piece. All in all the total time to create this wonderful piece was just under 40 hours. The texture and copper gilding on the wood is. Of decorated pieces I have seen in museums. Please zoom the pictures to see the intricate detail on the rim and underside. Here are some vitals on the piece. Size: 8.0" in diameter 2.0" tall.

Form: Raised lip open form. Decorations: Hand Stipple Texture on the rim with copper gilding. Finish: Natural mineral oil with carnuba/beeswax/damar polish. I try to describe each item as I see them. Some things I know a lot about and some I do not.
